Xeriscape with Armen Rose

My grandfather, Armen – to remind him of his homeland that he missed so much – planted fruit trees, grape vines and such in his little backyard to tend to. And tend to he did indeed with a bountiful harvest every year.

In honor of my grandfather I am starting a new category on my blog.  Armen’s last name in English means “Rose” and I think it’s in our genes to want to work in the dirt and be farmers.  Armen dreamed of having a house on a hill with fruit trees and roses.  I hope I am completing that dream for him.

In August of 2007 we moved into a home in the foothills of the Central Valley in California.  On my 3/4 acre site I envisioned transforming it into an eco-friendly, water-saving, natural site.  A place to meander through the wild-lands-type of setting to enjoy nature and the animals that populate it.  My place is full of native Quails, native California Buckeye trees, various lizards, the occasional coyote, skunk, and an assortment of birds and insects, some of which I have never seen before.

Please join me as I document the things I have done in my garden and what I have learned in the process. I will post things from time to time, so check back in to see how things develop.

Thank you Grandpa Armen “Rose”!
