In Response to the 60 Minutes Segment

We recorded the 60 minutes segment on Hay Tad – or the question about Armenia.  I watched it tonight.  It was hard to watch.  Every time I watch anything like that I think of my mother and my grandparents on both sides; I think of all the families in my lineage who were affected.  Torn from their parents; torn from their very homes; lost along the way to Der Zor, the desert in Syria.  I think how some of the bones they were sifting through might be those of my great-grandparents, my aunts and uncles who were buried there.

Once again we hear how an overwhelming amount of historians agree on the facts.  Why should there be any question?  It’s really very simple.  The U.S. needs Turkey; the U.S. needs their air bases, their friendship.  Turkey does not want to have to pay any restitution or return any buildings or land to Armenians who might want to lay claim.  It’s about money and oil.  It’s always about money and oil.  The Turkish ambassador claims the genocide word is offensive.  Sure, sure.  It’s offensive to their pocketbooks more likely.

Nevertheless, we will continue to cry over the bones in the desert and we will continue to remember.  No one, no country, mighty or small, can take that away from us. No one can silence the memories.

I'm a California girl raised by Armenian parents. Because I didn't understand the country and customs that my parents and grandparents came from, I felt awkward and different. Customs collided and barriers were created. Now as I ripen in age I've come back to my roots to rediscover and understand.
