DRAINAGE IN THE GARDEN

Posted By shirley on February 7, 2010

I never realized how important drainage was until I bought a house on a hill!  To make matters worse, it’s a 90 year old house with so-called “upgrades”!  Not really, but they thought they were upgrades, apparently.

The house has several tiers of rock walls which are in disrepair, cracking and falling apart. The former owner tried to re-cement them, but it didn’t work.  What really needs to be done and should have been done is drainage.  It took me awhile, but I finally figured out that the rock walls are cracking because of the pressure of the water.  If they had built drains within the garden levels it would have released the pressure of the water and diverted it through the drainage system.

I’m not sure how to fix that now, but I have started digging some make-shift drains to help the flow of water away from the rock walls and off to the side to the creek.  It’s a temporary fix, but I’m learning as I’m going.

Yesterday I went out into the rain and watched where the water was flowing. Some of the drains are working pretty well, but I had to dig them out more so as to keep them from filling up with dirt and debris.
