Israel and Turkey – Strange Bedfellows

An interesting article authored by Robert Fisk in the Independent showed up in my inbox yesterday. Apparently, Turkey and Israel are sometimes in cahoots with each other in denying the first holocaust of this century, the reasons are rather peculiar. It seems that Israel and Turkey depend on each other politically. I believe I also read that Israel’s water is supplied by Turkey. Israel has been in the strongest alliance with Turkey whenever any mention of an Armenian Genocide Resolution is proposed in the U.S. Congress and has pressured more than one president to stand down.
However, the sands of time shift and there was a recent shift about a year ago when Turkey rebutted Israel for slaughtering Palestinians in Gaza. Israel sniffed: ”Who are the Turks to talk about mass murder? Has anyone forgotten 1915?” If it wasn’t so sad, it would be almost comical how their memory suddenly cleared.
Mr. Fisk goes on to talk about Jerusalem historian George Hintlian’s family:
More than 70 members of George’s family were murdered in the butchery and death marches of 1915 – when German officers witnessed the system of executions, rail-car deportations to cholera camps and asphyxiation by smoke in caves – the world’s first ‘gas’ chambers. One witness, the German vice-consul in Erzurum, Max von Scheubner-Richter, ended up as one of Hitler’s closest friends and advisers. It’s not as if there is no connection between the first and second Holocausts.
I thought that was important because it should answer questions some people had about German involvement in the Armenian holocaust.
