PLANTS HUMMINGBIRDS LOVE

The following are plants that I have planted in my garden that the hummingbirds go wild over.  You can plant a few of these and forget hummingbird feeders!

I often sit in my chair and watch them, they even come up to me and flit around – I guess they’re wondering if I’m a flower since I’m so sweet (sarcasm intended, he-he).

California Fuschia

Plant a few of these and you will have an abundance of hummingbirds.  Depending on your weather, they will die back in the winter.  However, don’t worry; they come back with a vengeance.  Simply cut them back and come spring they will grow twice as big.  Give them plenty of room.  They do not require a lot of water so they are excellent for xeriscaping.

Mexican Sage

Hummingbirds love these.  They are also very easy to grow.  I have started mine from cuttings and have several plants now through that method.  These also die back in the winter.  Regardless, cut them back as the new shoots will be stronger and have more flowers.  They are very low maintenance.  Do not over water.

Salvia Greggii

Apparently, a native of Texas.  This is another easy to grow plant.  You can cut it back too.  I have several.  I have one that is called wild watermelon. The flowers are an awesome magenta color.

An interesting tid-bit I read about hummingbirds is that they claim a plant as their own and will fight other hummingbirds for it. I have seen this and never understood what was going on until I read about it!
