I Took Time

I TOOK TIME

I took time today

to stop and watch a butterfly

flap it’s glorious wings

throwing color to the wind

To watch the pinwheel

catch the wind

to make real a thing

that is not seen

The dog by my side

cherishing the moment

catching the rays, the movements

and registering each dot in time

with the twitching of her ears

I took time today and I saw

a great plan, but only a glimpse

a portal in time, in space

The animals take time, they move slowly

They are not in a race

Let me learn from the lowly of the earth

The beasts on whose backs we burden

with the toil that is our curse

In our wisdom, we became foolish

In our richness, we became poor

I took time today and saw the sun

It poured over my body

and the wind draped my soul

the lowliest of the earth

pleased my eyes

and took me to a time and place

Within and lost me for a moment
