Second Side-yard gets a Make-over

Posted By shirley on January 21, 2010

I am continuing to Xeriscape the yard around the house and am in the process of remaking a second garden on the side of the house.  My plan is to have a small patio on one side of this kidney shaped garden; a small area in the middle for a wading pool; and a brick patio on the other end for a BBQ.

First, I spent hours upon hours digging up weeds and ugly Bermuda grass roots.   After that, we rototilled the dirt and I continued pulling out Bermuda roots and preparing the ground.

After about two years of preparing the dirt (which can only be done after the rain comes – otherwise it’s like working with concrete during the summer months) and hauling rocks from the mountains, I finally got my rock patio garden installed.  We made a circle, filled the circle with sand and then placed the rocks.  Some of the sand in between the slate rock has sunk since the rains have come and I plan on filling those areas with pea gravel.

I made a small flower bed next to the patio which will have a few plants to frame the patio.  I already planted a grapevine which I hope will give me grapes one day!  Stay tune for progress on my BBQ patio.
