July 21st was the anniversary of the death of the artist Arshile Gorky. Arshile Gorky (whose real name is Vosdanik Adoian) died on July 21, 1948 at the young age of 44. I remembered his name as a famous artist but it wasn’t until I saw the movie, Ararat, that I realized he was Armenian. [...]

My grandfather, Baghdasar Kalalshian, died before I was born. Baghdasar was born in 1880 in Kharpet; Historic Armenia; Ottoman Turkey. He died a mysterious death in 1925 in California at the Stockton State Hospital.
